Hackers use Twitter to control botnet

Hackers are now using Twitter to send coded update messages to computers they’ve previously infected with rogue code, according to a report from net-monitoring firm Arbor Networks. This looks to be the first reported case of hackers using the popular micro-messaging company to control botnets, which are collections of infected PCs that can be directed to spy on their users, send spam, or attack websites with fake traffic.

Yahoo! proposes one-cent email ’stamp’ to reduce spam

Yahoo’s researchers want you to volunteer a one-cent fee for your outgoing emails, with proceeds from the virtual stamp going to charity, in a bid to cut down on spam. Can doing good really do away with spam, which consumes 33 terawatts of electricity every year, not to mention way too much of our time? The idea behind CentMail is that paying to send email – even a single penny – differentiates a real e-mail from spam blasts, and thus, spam filters can be adjusted to let the stamped mail sail right through, according to a report from New Scientist

Apple fires up tablet rumours with talk of September event

Apple has scheduled a keynote event for September, providing new grist to the Apple tablet rumour mill. Gizmodo says there will be two versions of the tablet, both with ten-inch OLED screens, and that they will look like a “giant iPhone, with a big black back.” One will be aimed at the educational market and the second will have a webcam, the website reports, and they’ll cost between $700 and $900.
